Star Trek now brought to you by the makers of Lost

But the great expectations that heralded 'Star Trek' may have raised the bar too high for any movie, even one made by 'Lost' creators J.J. Abrams and Damon Lindelof. First off, let me hold off anyone put off by my initial comments... Don't get me wrong, it was an entertaining movie. It had lots of fun, flashy effects. The space wars scenes were admirably realistic. I mean, for a movie that takes place in the future.... and in space.

The storyline was decent and complex, but not confusing. Perfect for the PG-13 audience. And if you classic Trekkers haven't heard yet....SPOILER ALERT..... Leonard Nimoy is back thanks to a shift in the time, space continuum. Speaking of which, young Spock and young Captain Kirk send out the right amount of arrogant youth and full blown machismo to fight the bad guys and each other.

And, if you know anything about what's happening in 'Lost' now, a similar time shifting theme

pays homage to the movie's tv series predecessor... along with these classic one liners:

• "Dammit Jim, I'm a doctor, not a... (fill in the blank)"
• "I've giv'n her all she's got captain"
• "May the force be with you"... oops, I meant, "Live long and prosper."

There are a couple of notable cameos to watch for. Winona Ryder as Spock's mom. I don't know what's up with all of the make-up. I can only surmise that it sets up for a flashback sequence in the sequel to the prequel. Are you still with me on that? And Tyler Perry as one of the head honchos at the Starfleet Academy. I really really wanted him to step out in a mumu and wig in at least one of the scenes, but no luck. Finally, the girl I couldn't remember where I knew her from... Jennifer Morrison from "House." No wonder she had blonde hair halfway through the season. Overall, 'Star Trek' will not disappoint fans or the average viewer. And even those too young to be classic series fans may be engaged enough become new diciples. Perhaps only time and the number of costumed Trekkers in line at the theatres will tell how long this franchise will live and prosper.
